San Diego Scots Announce Tartan Day 2008
San Diego’s major Scottish organizations will celebrate their culture – and tartans – as part of the area’s fifth annual celebration of Tartan Day.
Since 1998, April
6 has been designated by the U.S. Senate
as “Tartan Day” in recognition of the contribution made by generations of
Scottish-Americans to the foundation and prosperity of modern America.
Major celebrations are held in New York City and Washington D.C.
In San Diego, the day will be marked by two events – admission is free
to all!
A festival will be held at the
International Cottages, Balboa Park on Saturday,
April 5 from noon-4:00 PM, featuring San Diego’s best
Scottish bands and dancers. The
Scottish Clan and Tartan Information Center will help visitors find their own
tartans, and pipes/drums and re-enactment groups will perform.
Admission to the festival is free and open to the public, and traditional
Scottish fare will be available for sale.
An open house will be held at the House
of Scotland, International Cottages, Balboa Park on Sunday, April 6 from noon-4:00 PM, and
Tartan Day will be commemorated in conjunction with the House of Scotland's
regular Sunday open house at the International Cottages.
