San Diego Proclaims Tartan Day 2010
Tartan Day Festival, Saturday April 3; Open House, Sunday April 4; Int’l Observance, Tuesday April 6
Both the City and County of San Diego have declared Tuesday, April 6, 2010 as Tartan Day – and the area’s major Scottish organizations will celebrate their culture – and tartans – on the previous weekend as part of San Diego’s seventh annual celebration of Tartan Day!
The event will be marked by two events – admission is free to all!
· A festival will be held at the International Cottages, Balboa Park on Saturday, April 3 from noon-4:00 PM, featuring the House of Scotland Pipe Band and Ceilidh Band; the San Diego School of Highland Dancing; demonstrations by the 42nd Black Watch Highland Society; and music by the Westlin Weavers. The Scottish Clan and Tartan Information Center will help visitors find their own tartans, and traditional Scottish food and wares will be available for sale.
·
The regular Sunday
open
house
will be held at the House of Scotland, International Cottages, Balboa Park on Sunday,
April 4
from noon-4:00 PM, and Tartan Day will be commemorated with music and light
fare.
Since 1998, April 6 has been designated by the U.S. Senate as “Tartan Day” in recognition of the contribution made by generations of Scottish-Americans to the foundation and prosperity of modern America. Major U.S. celebrations are held in New York City and Washington D.C.
